The HSO Zero Waste Initiative started as an idea to reduce single-use waste packaging and overall plastic use for an environmentally healthy future. The initiative is to replace all plastic, and this is accomplished by using biodegradable and compostable plant-based, recycled, and even organic growing materials. Yes, we said “GROWING”!
The idea for this project came about when reviewing options for the perfect tea satchels for our hemp-infused teas. Most tea bags contain nylon and other plastic based fibers that allow manufacturers to save on costs. Have you ever noticed those heat-sealed tea bags? That is possible due to those previously mentioned plastic fibers. If plastic is unhealthy for our environment, how could this be okay for human consumption? In turn, our solution was biodegradable organic cotton and hemp blended fibers to create our Earth and body friendly tea satchels.
Being conscious of our environmental impact and beginning with biodegradable tea satchels, our ideas to increasing sustainability flourished. It was not long after discovering our alternative tea satchels that we came across seeded paper; eco-paper with seeds embedded into its fibers. This sparked the objective to box our products in this material. A material that gives back to living creatures found right in our own backyards! Our seeded paper boxes are made with post-consumer compostable materials and six (6) various non-GMO beautiful perennial wildflower species. These North American native wildflowers aim to help native bees and butterflies by giving various clean sources of pollen and nectar- a food source and helps to rebuild their habitat. Why is ‘giving back’ and helping small ecosystems important? Well amongst other living beings, bees and butterflies are natural pollinators that help to provide fruits and vegetables to billions of families and other wildlife across the globe.
Some facts about natural pollinators:
- Over 75% of the world’s crops require pollination to produce the food we consume. Pollinators provide pollination services to over 180,000 different plant species and more than 1200 types of crops!
- Pollinators add $217 billion dollars to the global economy and honeybees alone are responsible for between 1.2 and 5.4 billion dollars in agricultural productivity solely in the United States.
- Besides benefiting people with food to eat, pollinators support healthy ecosystems that clean the air, stabilize and boost soil health, protect from severe weather and support other wildlife.
- Many pollinator populations are in decline which has been attributed most severely to a loss in feeding and nesting habitats, as well as pollution and misuse of chemicals like pesticides and herbicides.
As our brand journeyed to keep things as close to nature as possible, we soon after obtained eco-friendly biodegradable labels made from sugar cane fibers and with a plant-based adhesive (making them also tree-free… BONUS!) The labels, along with our seeded paper boxes can easily be planted in the ground, for an endlessly beautiful nature experience.
Going further, our tamper-proof shrink band for our bottles are eco-friendly as well; made from plant cellulose, which is the main constituent of plant cell walls and vegetable fibers. Even the smallest details of our packaging have been altered because if it could be changed for the greater good, then it SHOULD be changed.
As our brand continues to grow and cultivate new products, we aim to continuously find the healthiest packaging alternatives for our environment and you! As we prepped our body butters for testing and packaging, we came across child-resistant and compostable jars made from hemp and agricultural by-products. Made from 100% renewable resources that have a zero-carbon footprint, we could not resist.
With the company’s love for our Mother Earth, we also like to contribute to ocean cleanup. With our lovely bodies of water still in mind, we also decided to take a different route for packaging our 510-thread vape cartridges. Our cartridges use 100% reclaimed and recycled plastic removed from the oceans (thanks to OceanWorks). This packaging is ASTM child-resistant certified, made from 100% reclaimed HDPE plastic a #2 recyclable. This being our only packaging that is plastic, we do strongly and kindly remind our consumers to reuse and/or recycle.
The HSO family is also a yearly donator and supporter of the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research and their annual Pancreatic Cancer walk for awareness in Long Island, NY. HSO also donates and supports Woodstock Farm Sanctuary, a non-profit organization advocating animal rights in alliance with other social justice movements, located in High Falls, NY. We take pride in creating a better life and future not only for our customers, but for our planet and all its inhabitants.
Could all of this get any better? Of course, it can! With your help and support, it will allow us to continuously grow, inspire, and help change the future for all industries across the globe. We truly believe in leading by example and will continue to take the necessary measures to do just that.
